JAL STARTS BIOFUEL FLIGHTS

biofuel noun [C or U]
UK /ˈbaɪ.əʊˌfjuː.əl/ US /ˈbaɪ.oʊˌfjuː.əl/ a fuel that is made from living things or their waste
from Cambridge Dictionary

Biofuel
Biofuel, any fuel that is derived from biomass—that is, plant or algae material or animal waste. Since such feedstock material can be replenished readily, biofuel is considered to be a source of renewable energy, unlike fossil fuels such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas. Biofuel is commonly advocated as a cost-effective and environmentally benign alternative to petroleum and other fossil fuels, particularly within the context of rising petroleum prices and increased concern over the contributions made by fossil fuels to global warming. Many critics express concerns about the scope of the expansion of certain biofuels because of the economic and environmental costs associated with the refining process and the potential removal of vast areas of arable land from food production.

fermentation noun [U]
UK /ˌfɜː.menˈteɪ.ʃən/ US /ˌfɝː.menˈteɪ.ʃən/
a process of chemical change in food or drink because of the action of yeast or bacteria, which may cause it to produce bubbles or heat, or turn sugars in it into alcohol:
Ethanol is an alcohol produced by fermentation of sugars.
Fermentation takes about 48 hours.
from Cambridge Dictionary

Fermentation chemical reaction
Fermentation, chemical process by which molecules such as glucose are broken down anaerobically. More broadly, fermentation is the foaming that occurs during the manufacture of wine and beer, a process at least 10,000 years old. The frothing results from the evolution of carbon dioxide gas, though this was not recognized until the 17th century. French chemist and microbiologist Louis Pasteur in the 19th century used the term fermentation in a narrow sense to describe the changes brought about by yeasts and other microorganisms growing in the absence of air (anaerobically); he also recognized that ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide are not the only products of fermentation.

hefty adjective
UK /ˈhef.ti/ US /ˈhef.ti/

a hefty bill/fine
Her salary will go up by a hefty 13 percent.
a hefty book containing a lot of information

carbon footprint noun [C] ENVIRONMENT
UK /ˌkɑː.bən ˈfʊt.prɪnt/ US /ˌkɑːr.bən ˈfʊt.prɪnt/
B2 Someone's carbon footprint is a measurement of the amount of carbon dioxide that their activities produce.
from Cambridge Dictionary

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our actions.
The average carbon footprint for a person in the United States is 16 tons, one of the highest rates in the world. Globally, the average is closer to 4 tons. To have the best chance of avoiding a 2℃ rise in global temperatures, the average global carbon footprint per year needs to drop under 2 tons by 2050.
Lowering individual carbon footprints from 16 tons to 2 tons doesn’t happen overnight! By making small changes to our actions, like eating less meat, taking less connecting flights and line drying our clothes, we can start making a big difference.
