Introduction
Auld Lang Syne is a traditional song of friendship and is sung
at midnight on New Year's Eve. Its melody is based on an old Scottish
fork tune. The words to the song are said to have been written by
Robert Burns, the 18th-century Scottish poet, although he may have
been inspired by some verses that already existed.
In Japan the song is sung at graduation ceremonies at schools.
In English-speaking countries, the song is associated with New Year's
Eve as people sing it at midnight to mark the end of the old year.
