英語リスニング入門(2003年8月4日Groundhog Day)

Introduction

Terms and Concepts

Every year, on February 2, a large number of people gather at a place
called Grobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, a small town in Pennsylvania,
for the Groundhog Day celebration. Early on the morning of this day,
an event takes place where a groundhog by the name of Phil is taken out
of his burrow to see if he casts a winter weather will follow, whereas,
if he doesn't, winter will soon give way to warm spring weather. This event
was started in the 1880s by the German settlers who had come to the town.

Setsubun is held one day before the first day of spring, which is February
3 or 4. People open the doors of their houses and drive the demons, or bad luck,
out of their homes by throwing soybeans and shouting “Demons out! Good luck in!”
It was started originally as an imperial event on New Year's Eve for the purpose
of getting rid of demons to welcome in a happy New Year.

英語5分間トレーニン(2010年2月3日モノローグ)

Happy birthday, Jane!
You seem surprised.
Did you think I'd forget it again?

Have you been to Korea?
I went there last year.
I only had time to visit Seoul.

I met my daughter's teacher yesterday.
Her school was holding an open house.
The teacher was quite impressive.
