An intense atmospheric river impacted the Pacific Northwest.
When atmospheric rivers make landfall, they often release their water vapour in the form of rain or snow.

The average atmospheric river carries an amount of water vapour roughly equivalent to the average flow of water at the mouth of the Mississippi River.
Atmospheric rivers are typically several thousand kilometres long and only a few hundred kilometres wide.
Climate change is expected to increase the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events and floods caused by atmospheric rivers.
